About the Show
Considered by many to be the greatest musical of all time, Gypsy is the story of a young woman overcoming her oppressive stage mother to become the famed burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee. (It is the most family-friendly play about a stripper ever written.) Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, music by Jule Styne, book by Arthur Laurents.
For the music portion of the auditions, prepare a song with a strong acting objective (a strong "want") of one minute or less. Bring music for the accompanist. A capella singing is discouraged. There is no special preparation for the dance or reading auditions. Dress comfortably; wear appropriate footwear - dance shoes or tennis shoes, no socks or bare feet. and be prepared for movement, and to read from the script. Please bring resume and headshot if available.
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm, January 19-February 4
All roles are open. Actors are not compensated at GLTG. The ages below are somewhat flexible. Gypsy has strong central roles for multiple women, men and children. Rose - the Mother June - Rose’s daughter (late teens to early 20s) Louise - Rose’s other daughter (late teens to early 20s) Tessie Tura Mazeppa Electra Herbie - Rose’s manager Tulsa - chorus boy with featured number (late teens to early 20s) Chorus girls and boys (late teens to early 20s) There are multiple non-singing/non-dancing character roles for adults. Several kids ages 7-12 are needed to play young June and Louise and their supporting chorus. Some of these are non-singing/non-dancing. One should play the clarinet.
